Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand and historically known as Siam  is a country in Southeast Asia on the Indochinese Penisula. With a population of almost 72 million, it spans 513,115 square kilometres (198,115 sq mi). Thailand is the 50th largest country by total area. Thailand is bordered by Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia and to the southwest by the Andaman Sea. The Chao Phraya and the Mekong River are the indispensable water courses of rural Thailand.  

 

Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand with about 11 million people live. Thailand is a middle power in global affairs and a founding member of  ASEAN. It has the second largest economy in Southeast Asia and the 23rd largest in the world. Thailand is classified as a newly industrialised economy, with manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism as leading sectors.

Thailand has three seasons. The first is the rainy or southwest monsoon season (mid–May to mid–October). Annual rainfall of 1,200 to 1,600 mm (47 to 63 in).  Winter or the northeast monsoon occurs from mid–October until mid–February. Most of Thailand experiences dry weather with mild temperatures. Summer or the pre–monsoon season runs from mid–February until mid–May. Temperatures can reach up to 40 °C (104 °F) during March to May, in contrast to close to or below 0 °C (32 °F) in some areas in winter. Southern Thailand is characterised by mild weather year-round with less diurnal and seasonal variations in temperatures due to maritime influences. 

The official language of Thailand is Thai, Kra-Dai language closely related to Lao, Shan in Myanmar, and numerous smaller languages spoken in an arc from Hainan and Yunnan south to the Chinese border. It is the principal language of education and government and spoken throughout the country. It is written in the Thai alphabet,  an abugida script that evolved from the Khmer alphabet. 

The country’s most prevalent religion is Theravada Buddhism, which is an integral part of Thai identity and culture. Thailand has the second-largest number of Buddhists in the world after China.  According to the 2018 National Statistical Office data, 93.46% of the country’s population self-identified as Buddhists. Other religious group also in Thailand as Muslims (5.3%), Christian (1.1 %), and Hindus and Sikhs. There is also a small but historically significant Jewish community in Thailand dating back to the 17th century.

The official currency of Thailand is the “Thai baht.” The code is THB and the sign is ฿. It is divided into 100 satang. The issuance of currency is the responsibility of the Bank of Thailand.
